When you resign in Saudi Arabia, how much end-of-service benefit (EOSB) you receive depends on how many years you served. This is set by Articles 84 and 85 of the Saudi Labor Law.
The base entitlement (Article 84)
- Half a month's wage for each of your first 5 years of service.
- One full month's wage for each year after the fifth.
- Partial years are paid proportionally, day by day.
The resignation reduction (Article 85)
If you resign, a sliding scale is applied to that base amount:
- Under 2 years: you get nothing.
- 2 to under 5 years: you get one third (1/3).
- 5 to under 10 years: you get two thirds (2/3).
- 10 years or more: you get the full amount (100%).
A worked example
Basic wage 5,000 SAR, resigning after 6 years and 5 months:
- Base = (5,000 x 0.5 x 5) + (5,000 x 1 x 1.42) = 12,500 + 7,100 = 19,600 SAR
- Resigned in the 5-10 year band, so you keep 2/3 = about 13,066 SAR
Exceptions that pay the full amount
Even if you resign, you keep 100% if your employer breached the contract (Article 81), or under Article 87 special cases (force majeure, or a woman resigning within 6 months of marriage or 3 months of childbirth).
